Hi Chuckychuck,
If you have a soundcard that uses the "intel8x0" module, then you can
put the option in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base as this:
"options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1"
Unfortunately I've discovered today this option seems to mute the laptop
speakers completely, at least for me. So it's not a good solution. The
solution will have to be to merge the Master+Headphone levels when
headphones areas plugged in, so the headphones can be controlled via the
normal controls.

As for my other bug, the laptop speaker output bug with "external
amplifier" option not being performed automatically, I filed this bug
