In th case of Kubuntu vs Ubuntu, it's like this:
* Both use ubuntu-base
* Ubuntu uses a gnome-centric ubuntu-desktop
* Kubuntu uses a KDE centric kubuntu-desktop
So there are ISO's of both, but they both pull packages from the same
repository. Xorg in Ubuntu is exactly the same as Xorg in kubunto for
instance.
You can also have kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop installed at the
same time :)
