Did you do click on "automatic upgrade" on the dialog that opened

libc6 is not using debconf for asking it's question, so there is no
way to detect it from synaptic. Newer versions of synaptic have a
terminal timeout of 60 secs (no action for 60 sec will automatically
exapnd the terminal tab). But the version in hoary does not have that :/

I opened a bug about the problem

The problem seems to be that the upgrade triggers a gtk bug that is
fixed in gtk-2.8 but present in gtk 2.6 (gnome bugzilla #300549). I
backported the patch and and attached it to the bugreport. It fixed
the crash problem for my test-run at least.
The problem of course is how to apply this fix _before_ the upgrade to
the installed hoary system :/
