Some of the recent kernels in the Debian repositories (2.6.11, 2.6.12)
have initrd images that load a generic IDE module before the Intel PIIX
module, resulting in DMA being off even on Intel chipsets. Since the
generic module is already loaded, the PIIX module doesn't, and since
the generic module doesn't support DMA, you can't enable it later with
hdparm (operation not permitted).



Maybe the Ubuntu initrd images have the same problem....
