As Ivan and Colin already answered, this is called UbuntuExpress. It's a
python program capable of installing the live session on a hard drive.
A parallel script was developed by me and my colleagues, which does
exactly the same thing, but in the form of a shell script, based on the
work of Klaus Knopper for Knoppix and Carlos Morimoto for Kurumin.
As we couldn't find a better name, this script is called
ubuntuexpress-preview (the company we work for). It currently installs
ubuntu live to a hard drive of your choice. It's simple, but it works
for about a year now (it was being used on another distribution before
ubuntu)
You can download it at
http://laa2.unifacs.br/preview/ue-shellhack/ubuntuexpress-preview-1-2.1.deb
Just install it into a live system, and run a
# ue-install
And it will work.
Hope this can help you.
