That is our actual preference as well. In fact we already did switch
to the gstreamer ALSA sink for a little while in Breezy, but we had to
switch the default back since dmix broke for too many people/sound
cards.

Completely dropping the concept of a mixer daemon would rock, but ALSA
isn't quite there yet. As I mentioned in another mail, I thought about
switching to ALSA again for Dapper and try to work with upstream to
get it working for the majority of cards. Are you interested in
contributing to this?
