usplash un- and reinstalled, but it does not appear

Hello again,

Is the following behaviour expected?

Because I don't like usplash very much (yet), I uninstalled it lately 
(which forces uninstalling ubuntu-desktop). Yesterday, I installed 
ubuntu-desktop again (which forces re-installing usplash). I expected 
usplash to appear again, but it doesn't!

The only other change I did is add vga=0x305 to the kernel parameters in 
grubs menu.lst:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-9-386 root=/dev/hda2 ro quiet splash vga=0x305

I'm running Breezy (latest).
