XFCE Default instead of GNOME?

With the sluggishness of GNOME 2.12 would the community be willing to
consider XFCE as the default Desktop Environment for Ubuntu? It's much
snappier on older hardware, and a lot easier on the eyes.

Or would this require a fork off Ubuntu (much like Kubuntu) if ever it
would be pursued?
