considering that you can fit a default Dapper installation in probably
2 Gbytes of hard drive space, the hardware requirement is not that
great for anyone to test Dapper who already use Ubuntu on the same
computer; as long as you are willing to (double-triple-quad)-boot your
computer, something usually quite easy to do with the current
installer.
Personally I tried to use that free VMware player, but it seems trying
it on 256mb of RAM (for either my desktop or my laptop) was an
impossibility for any of the OS image I tried.
