An employee of VMware (though I'm sure not speaking on behalf of them)
posted on planet.gnome.org a while back basically saying "yes, we know
you can make your own image files but I don't really see any problems
arising because of it."

This would make sense because I think VMware "gets it".  They realize
that virtualization will become more of a commodity (see recent
developments of Xen[1] along with newer CPU's coming out
