On x86, bootloaders access your hard drive via BIOS calls. The BIOS 
provides no information about what sort of bus your drive is connected 
to. As a result, the bootloader can't tell if you're on IDE, SCSI, USB, 
Firewire or some random local setup. This makes it quite difficult for 
it to tell the kernel.
