I think the ntpdate call is a secret way the Ubuntu team checks on the
popularity of their distribution :-)
Seriously, I also had a problem on hoary (allegedly fixed on breezy)
where a fresh install, when connected to a network but without
routeability, would hang for ever checking security repositories, etc.
So, we need more than a twinkly lights check - perhaps a default route
present, and name services ?
Neither of these, actually, would have fixed my hoary problem, or your
uLund problem, but at least they are quick checks.
