Upgrading the kernel in distributions like knoppix is difficult
because the hardware detection system relies in too many 2.4
kernel-specific features. And many drivers for hardware like winmodems
were not updated to 2.6 kernel series.
So, yes, you can upgrade the kernel in your box (provided it supports
all your hardware, and you upgrade some major subsytems, like
hotplug). If you need to master a knoppix like distro with kernel 2.6,
I bet that you'll find many good starting distributions that already
did the dirty job (including knoppix).
About Ubuntu hardware support, it's actually pretty good, but as I
said, if you have those tricky winmodems, you may have problems.
To finish, I would like to point that this list isn't the most
appropriate place for such questions (seb is getting mad at us asking
such questions in a _developers_ list). Next time, try the ubuntu
users list.
Cheers
