try disabling VESA switching to CONFIG_VESA=n or CONFIG_VESA=m.
Including VESA=y by default is something you can do only if you are 100% sure
that the kernel/gfx card is known to work fine. If it was previously than the
driver might have changed, and considering this is a 12rc4 i am not too worried
or would spend too much time on it.
