Not being aware of the HorizSync/VerticalRefresh trick, I struggled with
this problem for several days. The workaround for me was to compile a
recent snapshot of i810 DRI[1] and replace
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o.

So in case you prefer a more time-consuming alternative, there you
go... :)
