MD raid device (big) problem

Hi,

I re-installed 3 days ago Ubuntu preview on my PC (Asus P4P800S-X, P4
2.8Ghz, 512M, 2x80Gb SATA), with "/" on /dev/md0 (/dev/sda1 & /dev/sdb1
RAID1), and swap on /dev/md1 (strangely /dev/evms/.nodes/sdb1 & sdb2
RAID1 too).

I have a question and a problem :

question: why is md1 in evms ? and not simply in /dev ? at boot it fails
to start with mdadm-raid, but starts ok with evms and is ok after.

problem : i dist-upgraded, installed linux-image-2.6.16-5-686 in place
of 2.6.10-X-386, and the machine won't boot anymore :

Starting Ubuntu...
pivot_root: No such file or directory
/sbin/init: 428: cannot open dev/console: No such file
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I have exactely the same symptom in another configuration, if I install
on /dev/sda1, create a mirror with a defective disk and sdb1, in the
objective of booting on md0 at next boot and reintegrating /dev/sda1 in
the MD ; even if i rebuild an initrd with md and raid1 inside
(/etc/mkinitrd/modules), it won't find md0 ! (it works if i include
raid1 and md in the kernel, but i'd like to stick to the ubuntu standard
kernel if possible.

How can i solve this ? Is there any way besides reinstall ? A magic
incantation with the live CD ?

Sadly enough i have purged the -386 kernel before rebooting, so i can't
boot on it anymore.

regards,

Olivier
