Custom ubuntu d-i image creation help?

Where/how are the udebs built? When I build using the prepatched
linux-source-2.6.10/linux-tree-2.6.10, no udebs were produced via
make-kpkg.
Should I be performing an apt-get source/dpkg-buildpackage upon a
different package? If so, which one?
