Custom ubuntu d-i image creation help?

I'm trying to create a netinst image using a different kernel than the
default in order to work around Ubuntu bugzilla bug #7759.

I have been attempting to follow the instructions in the d-i source's
doc/custom-kernel.txt. I have experience, and thus it wasn't hard to
create a set custom kernel packages. I based my kernel .config off
official Ubuntu 686-smp source.

I have been stymied at creating the udebs (step 2). dpkg-buildpackage
runs kernel-wedge, and it complains about missing modules. None of them
are ones I need, however the build process stops when it attempts to
copy hardware firmware over. (Specifically, it stops on the atmel
firmware.)

The documentation recommendations and build-depends are all satisfied. I
additionally installed the atmel-firmware package, but to no avail.

Any help would be very appreciated! If I cannot get Ubuntu (or Debian)
installed on these machines, I think I'll be very SOL as I haven't
administered a Redhat machine in *years*. (Someone mentioned FC3 has
the support I need... ugh!)

Thanks in advance,

Scott.
