Well, maintaining a reliable and known to work version like gaim 1.1.4
(doing targeted little fixes if required) is a kind of temporary
fork...

Now, I do understand your concerns and maybe some "years
of proven robustness and stability" will bring forth autopackage, who
knows? Keep up your fine work, it will in one way or another end up in
universe someday I'm sure.
