nForce ide driver

Hi,

I have pretty slow transfer rates between my cd-drive and my hd. This
seems to be because I can't enable dma for my cd drive.

On my gentoo box I fixed the same problem (on the same machine) by
activating some nforce specific option in the kernel and recompiling.
Is there a way I can activate this option in the default ubuntu kernel
(probably by loadng some kind of module) without manually compiling my
own kernel and more importantly, why doesn't ubuntu load that module
on it's own.

for reference: my laptop is a Compaq Presario R3000 with nForce 3 chip
and i'm using Horay.
