I have seen this problem too, once, on a laptop. For some reasons depmod -a was not executed. Doing
it manually solve the issue forever.

Can you see the boot prompt and you cannot type, or there is absolutely nothing?
Colin and I fixed this a while ago for sparc, but the fix was quite generic and not
arch specific.
