This is because sometimes the ABI in the kernel breaks, but also because
the nvidia driver is proprietary and cannot be included in the standard kernel or main.
That means that it must be compiled externally.

only solution 1) is valid when there is a planned ABI change. Recently
the ABI broke and we did not expect it, tought.

The real and only solution would be to convince nvidia to release their
code and make it GPL, or to release the specification for their hardware
so that developers could actually work on a driver.
