(It *can* "sit on top of ALSA" as an ALSA plugin, but this is not the most
optimal way of using jack. However, that method does have merit in that all
other non-jack-aware apps can use exactly the same system. We did look into
this as an option, unfortunately the ALSA/JACK plugin is quite immature.)
