| didn't work, too. So, I did the following dirty hack, which helped:

| $ sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/metacity
| $ sudo killall metacity && sleep 1 && sawfish &

Using gconf-editor is a bit easier, or perhaps sawfish has a --replace
option (openbox has; it replaces the current window manager).

If you install brightside, you can get edge flipping with metacity
too, so if you don't need sawfish for something else than the edge
flipping, trying out brightside might be an option.

| And as mentioned above: if Ubuntu will definitely not integrate KDE
| officially, I won't ask for it anymore.
