Not sure if this will help or not, but I have an acer laptop with a
widescreen.  I found out that there is a bug in the bios and 1280x800
isn't reported with an intel 855 graphics chip.  Fortunatly someone
wrote a patch.  You can find it here...

I wasn't using mode 58 so I changed it like this



855resolution 58 1280 800



then restart your window manager and it should be fine.  If it does,
run the command when your system boots.
