Loving ld with --as-needed

I was redirected to this thread by Google, when I started looking into
the "--as-needed" ld option. I hope someone may be able to help.

This actually isn't an Ubuntu question. I have installed a new distro
out of Germany called CCux-linux; it is a 686 optimized distro with the
latest and greatest of (almost) everything.

When I tried to compile a test program, using the simplest possible
command:

cc foobar.c

(which should compile and link foobar.c, resulting in a.out)

the compile worked fine, but ld crashed and burned, saying
"unrecognized option "--as-needed". Now, since I didn't enter that
option on the command line, it must be a default setting somewhere. Can
anyone help me with where this default is set, so that I can "unset" it
- clearly CCux-linux doesn't completely understand it! Thanks!
