I'm glad this thread isn't closed yet, because I have the same problems
with Hoary on a recent Compaq Presario R3000 laptop (european,
R3309EA): touchpad is not recognised. But when I do a > rmmod psmouse and then a > modprobe psmouse it works in standard mode; not the fancy ALPS mode. The solution is the
same in a recent distro of Debian Sarge.

It took me two days to find this out :-x , so I'm saving it here for
the poor bastard that has this problem after me. It has not become a
feature in Hoary yet, and I presume the bug still stands.

I cannot apply the given solution, for I do not have a kernel source
for linux 2.6.10-5-386 that came with my distro (From LXF). In the
archives (nl.archive.ubuntu.com) there's only a package for the source
of 2.4.27-9. Can anyone help me get the kernel source for 2.6 with the
ubuntu patches? I like the fact that the nvidia driver gives me the
full 1280x800 display, so I wouldn't want to lose that. I also would
like to use ndiswrapper for the bradcom wlan, but I need the kernel
source for that too!

And yes, thanks for ubuntu. In gnome it even gets me in and out
hibernation \\:D/
