Oh I really don't think that would good :-/
I mean, having an icon staring at you all day long, taking space, giving
the user more stuff to 'decode' when he looks at everything that's on
his desktop... it overloads the brain ;-)
Well, I mean, the higher the visibility and 'intrusiveness' in the UI of
a given function (menu bar, workspace switcher whatever) the most
important, and/or used, the functionality must be. Editing a menu is not
exactly something you do often (only when you install an app and are
unhappy with the way it's integrated in the menu) it should be easy to
find (because it's meant for non tech users, who won't be able or
willing, to search 10 minutes for the editor) but completely invisible
during 'normal' use of the desktop, non intrusive IOW.
Well at least default should be somethins like this. Of course, if
people have a disease that leads them to edit their menu 10 times a day,
then for these users it an icon in the panel may be handy. But it's very
easy for users to add an icon in there, so these rare persons should be
able to figure ou by themselves how to add a SMEG icon/launcher, in the
panel, where they see fit.

Well, just my 0,02 Euros ;o)
