Over here the ISO is 521220096 bytes for the daily build.  Gnoppix is
about 700 megs.  The kernel modules are 43M uncompressed (probably 50%
or 30% that compressed) and the image is 1.1M.

you need scsi, IDE, USB, 1394, and CD related stuff in the initrd.  I've
never seen this hack, but I'm fairly sure it'd be possible to just put
all the modules in minirt.gz and bind mount the /lib/modules/ directory
from /initrd once root is pivoted with pivot_root.

There's space.  It's just work that's basically minimal gain, as it's
orders of magnitude easier (maintainer wise) to just install ubuntu and
test the kernels by installing them too, so it's probably not worth it
anyway.

That being said, carry on.  I'm just bouncing ideas around.
