USB CD-ROM detection

For some reason, on the latest live CD (and only the latest), I can't load
d-i from my USB CD-ROM drive. The cause seems to be that /dev/cdroms/cdrom1
is missing (/dev/cdroms/cdrom0, the built-in IDE one, is present).
The device node for the drive itself (/dev/scsi/.../cd) is present.
udevstart fixes the problem (sound familiar?). This happens consistently.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour? I assume it affects the install CD as
well.
