X auto configuration works fine here. Tested on two systems with
a) an older ATI Rage Pro Mach64 and 
b) a newer SIS 740

However on the SIS 740 the debian installer's lower six lines are off
screen. Thus some of the <ok> buttons are not visible.

The relevant part of dmesg might be this:

vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
vga16fb: initializing
vga16fb: mapped to 0xc00a0000
fb0: VGA16 VGA frame buffer device
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
                                                 ^^^^^

It get's initialized a 80x30 but only 80x24 is shown on screen.

Simple workaround for me is to boot with i.e. vga=791
