This has already been reported to the Debian BTS as #290049.  I would
suspect that you are right to suggest that putting it into the API in
some fashion would be more acceptable than the environment variable -
it's more flexible and requires less of the system hosting the zlib
application to be used.

That said, I'd be somewhat reluctant to put any API change into the
Debian package as a local change, though I'd be happy to help people
work with upstream if people thought that was useful.  Obviously, that
wouldn't answer the immediate problem.  An approach like using an
environment variable or LD_PRELOAD would be a better candidate for a
local change since it doesn't create visible incompatibilities.

If there's work being done on this it would be very helpful if you could
keep me in the loop.
