consider gutenprint.

i don't know if gutenprint (new name of gimp-print) will be integrated
to next version of ubuntu, but it could be very interresant to consider
using it (5.0.0-beta-3 for the moment)

i test http://people.debian.org/~rleigh/gutenprint/sid/5.0.0-beta3/
with success .. 

(the main advantage for me is to have the cups-calibrate setting witch
work under gimp, and it look like realy more easy to use :)

all the freatures of gutenprint : 
the changelog gimp-print 4.2.7 -> gutenprint-5.0.0-beta3
