My recommendation to input Japanese on Ubuntu would be a combination of 1) Anthy (kana->kanji conversion egine) 2) UIM (support Anthy) 3) SCIM (support UIM) This combination works like a charm on my Warty and I got used to it back when I was using Mandrake 10.1.
