So it hung at that point?  Can you check (with sysrq+t or something) where
it's stuck?

On systems where it works, eject normally prints that error, and then
succeeds (the CD ejects) and exits.

Eek.  I assumy they respawned and worked thereafter?

So you never saw the "press enter" prompt after the eject?

(the eject functionality works fine on all architectures for me)
