If you check xorg.conf, you will see that the default config is using
Option "DCC", to get the resolution information directly form your
monitor.

It works very well here on my 19" LCD screen; I am at 1280x1024 by
default.

Please leave it as it is now, it is perfect. I am having a lot of
trouble with Fedora which is using HorizSync and VertRefresh (but no
DCC). It sets the refresh rates off limit, so I have a blank screen ->
Fedora is not able to configure the screen to have a display (even
640x480 would be better than nothing).

DCC is the way to go. We need to go forward, not backward. So if your
monitor does not support DCC, get a new one or you can still edit your
refresh rates manually.

However, once the major features are implemented in ubuntu, it would be
nice to have a display configuration gui for the people who are having
difficulties in configuring their display.
