Ubuntu install on laptop failed repeatedly

I too own a Dell 700m and my install either hangs at setting up
libgsm1 or libpt-1.6.3. I've tried adding nolapic to the kernel line in
the boot, but that hasn't solved the problem. Any help on this matter is
appreciated.
