As it happens, one exists already (for thin client remote floppy support
originally, but this use case was understood when it was written), which you
can find on the gnome-vfs mailing list archives. The major drawback is that
only gnome-vfs enabled apps could use it, but that's not a big problem for
us in Ubuntu. :-) I was quite seriously considering it for hoary, but didn't
have enough time - would you like to check it out and let us know how it
goes?
