Is the CD-ROM still configured in the BIOS setup when you disconnect it?
Try disabling it there, and see if it makes a difference.

It's rather odd that it works after a reboot, but in any case we need a
trace from when the system is in the problematic state, so yes, please try
the instructions.

The problem is unlikely to be with the hal package (though it may be the
trigger); if the entire system slows down, then it is likely a kernel
problem.

A copy of /var/log/debian-installer/syslog from your system might be
enlightening, but please provide precise details about what actions you took
in the installer, and what error messages you saw.
