The password dialog requests a full grab of the keyboard, so that no other
window can take its input during the period of password entry. That means
you don't have to be worried about (cheap'n'dirty) keyboard listeners, etc.

Not so much GNOME, it's an X security feature used all over the place, for
good reasons. :-)
