Why does the default Ubuntu Install format the Hard Disk?

Ummm.... ubuntu DOES offer to repartition. If you already have windows
installed, ubuntu offers to shrink the NTFS partition and install to the
free space, which it configures as an extended partition with a swap
partition and a root partition. Works like a charm.
