Modem users' pain

my two cents.
Prelude: I own a nb with ich3 modem. sl-modem needed and (this time)
installed and working. With warty no way.

I run to networking menu, fill all the info in modem setup, and modem
dosn't connect. I need a X3 command to make modem don't wait for
dialtone. (I live in italy).
Looking around, found where put the X3 command (somewhere in /etc, i
forget it) and try agian. The modem dial out (No sound of dial but isn't
important). Watch the messages and notice i got the isp IP & DNS
correctly. But still can't navigate. The gateway still was pn eth0
interface. 
Try with pppconfig, cheat the conf file for the X3 command, dial out and
get connected.
So i think there was much work to do. And another thing i would like is
something to show if modem is online and if there is data echange. I now
i can use Network monitor applet, but every time i change connection  i
must change it too. Why modem applet don't show the status and data
excange ?

Wishlist: sl-modem driver included by default, pppconfig configuration
done by modem setup, checbox for dialtonecheck and a modem applet that
show modem status and data excange.
