Oh, and by the way, so as not to be _that_ negative ;):

Although I do miss it having been more polished and tested,
Ubuntu-spatial might be an interesting mode to work in. Once all the
inconsistencies are sorted out, which I suppose will not take very long
[-o<, the worst remaining problem is the lack of a way to go back to the
parent folder. I suggest putting a listing of parent folders alongside
the top of the window, just under the menu, just like the new open
dialog does. This would effectively be a extended version of the
listing in the bottom left, which could be removed, leaving more space
for the status bar. This would be consistent with the open dialog,
directly accessible, and intuitive.

For extra coolness points, make the buttons valid drag and drop targets
;)
