Hoary upgrade: no network connection

Nearly the same on lotus, the machine with no problems.

On fee, the problematic pc, this leads to:

Cannot get current device settings: Operation not supported
  not setting speed
  not setting duplex

Quite strange, particularly because the same hardware runs with a
live cd without any problems. Anybody out there with further ideas??
