hi all,
after matching my very personal MOTU target for hoary (which i didnt
express public), of finding someone who is going for MOTU and willing to
package hula for universe (thanks herzi, you did wonderful work and we
now have a really nice easy to install and preconfigured groupware suite
for SOHOs aboard), i would like to state with my next personal MOTU
target for breezy a little more public, since it will have to involve
more then one MOTU hopeful i guess:
i have worked a lot in/with GIS (Geo Information Systems) related
companies in the last years, or have worked for companies whose tools
were based on GIS maps and data. there is a lot of commercial stuff out
there that is already running on linux for example smallworld from GE is
running fine on linux on both sides (server and client). during my admin
and system design work i did for some of these companies i noted that
many if not all of the students already used the freeware tool grass
(http://grass.itc.it/grass53/) for their work.... often as a preferred
tool over the commercial ones.
most of these companies liked to present their map material online, so a
mapserver was needed to provide beautiful zoomable maps in websites.
what i have in mind here is to form a new team, MOTUGis or MOTUGeo that
cares for integration of the most recent grass5 and a preconfigured easy
installable mapserver out of the box, as well as all tools needed for
everyday usage of a GIS workstation....
as a goodie this team could improve the
https://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/UbuntuWorldWide wiki page with a
zoomable map interface a la http://maps.google.com/ :)
note that i'm nor a geodesist myself and neither interested in working
with maps, its just a lacking feature i'd like to see included...
i created a wiki page, plaese add ideas, suggestions etc there.

ciao
oli
