Why wouldn't the patch use the already existing key
"/apps/nautilus/preferences/window_always_new"?

The description for that key:

"If set to true, then Nautilus will bring up a new Nautilus window by
default whenever an item is opened."

Whereas "no_ubuntu_spatial" needs to be created by the user.

Personally, I found the old spatial behavior much easier to use. Easier
to understand at least. I thought that the "browser" option was the
alternative, already an option found in nautilus Preferences?

(Sorry Jorge, I forgot to reply to the list)
