AMD64: crash on boot with smp kernel (on Linux certified system)

I would like to run the AMD64 version of Ubuntu
"Warty" on a Linux
certified Dual Opteron system with 8GB RAM.
Installation of Ubuntu and
updating all packages via apt worked perfectly. The
single processor kernel
(amd64-generic) also works just fine and does
recognize the complete RAM.

However, the SMP version of the kernel (amd64-k8-smp)
crashes right
after "booting linux" with a nasty kernel panic error
message, followed by a complete
console freeze. Unfortunately, the crash happens so
early that there are no messages
to be found in /var/log/*

Any ideas why this might happen?

The odd thing is that the machine (Fujitsu Siemens
Celsius V810) is Linux
certied and runs SuSE 9.1 with amd64 smp kernel
without any problems at all:

Cheers,

  Freddy
