initrd-tools packages are up at
http://people.ubuntu.com/~daniels/thermal-fans/all/; if you grab
initrd-tools, install it (during the install phase), then run 'sudo
apt-get install --reinstall kernel-image-2.6.8.1-3-686'.  That should
give you a kernel that loads thermal before fan -- you do need to do
this in the installer, unless you can complete the entire thing less
than 30sec before bootup, or in a butcher's coolroom. :)
