A good bit of this should be able to be autodetected.  For instance, you
can often ping the gateway, proxy, etc.  I suspect that a large number
of cases could be autodected (ie. try on each profile for 'fit').  With
a default profile to fall back to, it should "just work".  The logic
would take some good programing.  I'm very curious to see the new
NetworkManager from RedHat.  thom: are we going to see package of that
for hoary early on?
