This is answered in the FAQ, but yes, it's less than ideal.

The solution for Hoary is that, since we won't be shipping fam anymore, we
don't need to include portmap in the default desktop install, and so it can
be configured to listen on all interfaces by default (since the user will
only install it if they really want it).

There are a few common solutions for this type of problem, but fortunately I
think we can avoid them all for Hoary.
